Work packages

Work package 1: Project co-ordination

Objectives: The project is organised into ten Work Packages (WP2 to WP11), co-ordinated by a management Work-Package (WP1). Objective of this Work Package is to take care of the co-ordination of the technical activities of the project. For this purpose, a co-ordination structure will be defined. More precisely, the Project Co-ordination Committee (PCC) will be created in order to support all the activities in the project and delegate the management of the WP to WP leaders. The PCC, chaired by the Scientific Supervisor, which is a member of Coordinator’s Organization, consists of one representative from each partner.

Briefly, the main objectives of the WP1 are:

  • Manage the work progress at consortium level and monitor the proper production of the deliverables according to the established schedule.
  • Ensure that the human resources are efficiently allocated.
  • Detect and/or avoid scheduling deviations by taking corrective actions.
  • Organize plenary progress meetings.
  • Exchange the information to the project participants through working papers and administrative documents.

Work package 2: Collection, clipping, categorization of various existing data, activities and services

Objectives: Objective of this work package is to define sources of data useful for the project, in order to have a detailed characterization of the area of Region of Central Greece. It is well known that optimal data workflow and management aer mandatory for the progress and quality of the project. Another objective is to determine complementarities and synergies with existing databases. The information gathered will be integrated in a detailed file.

Work package 3: Modeling and Design of DBMS

Objectives: The objective of this WP is to model appropriately all the sorts of data (conventional, spatial, spatiotemporal, layered) that will be stored in the system by appropriate data types, to identify the relationships between these data types, so that expressing and processing of the required queries will be possible and to design the logical and physical database structures. Moreover, the ability of the user to define and manipulate new data categories that are likely to appear during the system life and parallel access to data will be taken into account and appropriate policies will be designed. Incomplete data modeling will also be considered.

Work package 4: Methodology for efficient processing of complex queries

Objectives: The objective of this WP is to choose existing, or to design novel methods for efficient processing of queries on spatial, spatiotemporal, conventional and mixed types of data that will be asked by the users of the system. Processing will be based on access structures that will take advantage of spatial and/or temporal locality of data and on reuse of calculations. Simplicity should be combined with efficiency and proprietary techniques should be combined with ones offered by the underlined DBMS. The target is to achieve acceptable I/O, CPU and overall performance for the anticipated scale of data and parallel access to the system.

Work package 5: Development of Environmental Geographical Information System

Objectives: Objective of this work package is to update and consolidate existing IT System of Municipality GIS into a technological framework and a reference architecture that enables the effective transfer of designed DBMS and the “birth” of the Environmental Geographic Information System. The architecture will also involve the uptake of the data model defined on previous WP’s 3,4.

Special consideration is given to define divisions between general EGIS components (like location information), domain-specific EGIS components (like Public transport), and area-specific modules. Common parts of the prior assets and different API’s will be identified and shared (e.g. location service API). At the end of the WP, all relevant project results will be packaged and consolidated into the EGIS v1.0 for further dissemination and impact.

Work package 6: Migration of existing data and interface with other systems

Objectives: Objective of this work package is to migrate and interface EGIS on environmental data domain:

  • Building on existing interfaces, services, co-operation and initiatives of the data,
  • Migrating digital data catalogues and adapting static and real-time information
  • Creating the required set of open source format translation and other components, both client and server
  • Defining, creating and implementing sets of open source and beta-apps connecting to the EGIS
  • Experimenting, validating and performing the technical changes and adaptations required to extend results to other pilot areas
  • Creating the conditions for developing and expand to other applications for environment on an European scale

Special consideration is given to define the interfaces in the EGIS in a way that implementing the EGIS – piloting in City of Lamia – will allow for open, further innovation of new smart services beyond this pilot by the project partners. This means for example 3rd party SME developers to develop their own apps for environmental approach using the city‘s new EGIS interface. These open interfaces and activities will take place in several cities.

Work package 7: Mapping Geographic Data

Objectives: Objective of this work package is to use the implemented EGIS v1.0 for mapping the geographic data available already by the WP 2 :

  • Mapping on existing DBMS and initiatives of the data,
  • Adapting static and real-time geographic information
  • Experimenting, validating and performing the technical changes and adaptations required to extend results

Work package 8: Checking and testing of operation

Objectives: The objective of the Work Package is to check and test the operation of the Integrated Environmental Geographic Information System for data quality and consistency. Special consideration is given on the processing of complex queries and the implementation of the WP4 outcomes.

Work package 9: System evaluation

Objectives: The objective of WP9 is to evaluate system’s functionality and usability. This will be performed by TCG members which will include civil and environmental engineers.

Work package 10: Revision and sustainability of the system

Objectives: Objective of this work package is to improve and finalize the Integrated Environmental Geographic Information System. Also, identifying ways and means for the sustainability of the project.

Work package 11: Dissemination and Impact

Objectives: The dissemination work package of the project will identify key stakeholder groups and ensure that the project reaches the widest possible targeted audience. In particular we will creating a “step-change” in the way that society, government, scientific communities and investors are willing to approach in a more environmental way using open data and knowledge-based systems. The project‘s Communications and Dissemination Plan will deliver a program of active promotional activities aimed at ensuring the widest
possible dissemination of the project‘s activities and outcomes. It would also involve direct promotional work using social media and social networking applications and tools. The dissemination will be ongoing throughout the project and will, in particular, include a range of activities to engage the targeted groups within each of the participants.
